Schloss Wittgenstein

Castles, fortresses & ruins

These relics of long-forgotten times have a magical effect on many people.
Siegen-Wittgenstein is home to many of these historic monuments, all of which have had eventful histories and have yet more stories waiting to be discovered.
The Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein still live at Berleburg castle today. However, visitors are still permitted to explore and admire this imposing building by taking part in a guided tour – with a bit of luck, they might even meet the Prince himself.
If the Ginsburg fortification in Hilchenbach could talk, it would certainly have a lot of stories to tell. This is where William of Orange mustered his troops one early morning in the 16th century to liberate his beloved home, the Netherlands, from Spanish occupation.
It is still possible to feast like a king in the moated castle of Hainchen, the only elevated moated castle in NRW, while children in Bad Laasphe go to school at Wittgenstein castle.
