Where the Guilds worked – Old Town and Surroundings of the Lower Castle”
Siegen made easy: This offer is barrier-free and has only minor differences in altitude
The Lower Castle, once the residence of the royal Protestant line of Nassau-Siegen, was converted for the University of Siegen who took over in 2016. The Martini Church – the oldest sacral building in Siegen – and the Museum of Contemporary Art are located in the immediate vicinity.
These buildings are viewed from the outside before the path leads through the pedestrian zone ‘Alte Poststraße’ (Old Post Street) into the Old Town quarter of the town. This is where building ensembles in the characteristic half-timbered style can be seen: buildings that have survived war and destruction. Street names tell the stories of the guilds that once worked their craft here.
The difficulty on this walk is the paving of the old town streets. The Schlossplatz (Palace Courtyard) and pedestrian zone are level and easy to walk on.
