More than 40 million visitors from all over the world have allowed themselves to be caught in the spell of Germany´s largest and certainly most beautiful limestone cavern with its stalactites and stalagmites, the Atta Cavern. The Atta Cavern was discovered by accident. What a coincidence!
Quarry workers of the Biggetal limestone company couldn´t believe their eyes when they were blown up on July the 19th in 1907: as the huge dust cloud of the explosion had subsided, they looked into an exposed gap in the rock, flooded with sunny daylight. They crawled in and what they saw left them speechless.
The workers looked into a labyrinth of the most beautiful limestone formations - artfully grown stalactites and stalagmites - stone curtains that hung artfully on the rock face as if a decorator had done his master´s certificate with it.
The Attendorn quarry workers had - without knowing it - uncovered the entrance to one of the greatest natural wonders on earth: the entrance to the fabulous Atta Cavern. Named after Princess Atta who gave the hanseativ city of Attendorn her name.
