Founded in 1905 and situated in the Upper Castle, the Siegerland Museum is a regional museum for art and cultural history.
The Siegerland Museum is partof the City Tour
In addition to an extensive collection of portraits of the lines of Nassau and Orange, the museum exhibits ten large-scale paintings by the Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), who was born in Siegen. A rich collection of the artist’s graphic art can be viewed in temporary exhibitions. A number of exhibits on the top floor of the castle convey the impression of domestic life in the 19th century.A reconstruction of residential property complete with historic furniture and paintings creates a realistic feeling of bygone days in the Siegen area. For over 2,500 years, mining and iron extraction left their mark on the region. There were several hundred pits and smelting sites and until 1962 the Siegerland was even home to the deepest iron mines on the European continent. To illustrate the mining work carried out in the Siegerland, an exhibition mine was constructed under the castle courtyard in 1938. The pit, which is 800 metres deep, exhibits mainly mining equipment.
