Hike around Hilchenbach-Grund, the birthplace of Johann-Heinrich Jung, known as Jung-Stilling (1740-1817). The trail leads through our unique natural surroundings to the Ginsberger Heide and the Ginsburg ruins. From there, it’s downhill past Zollposten train station to the Insbachtal valley, where a water tread basin invites you to relax.

Author’s recommendation

A visit to the “Jung-Stilling-Stube” room. The room can be visited by pre-arrangement. Of particular interest are the simple instruments with which Jung-Stilling conducted his highly successful eye operations.

Destination

The “Alte Kapellenschule” (old chapel school) village community building in Hilchenbach-Grund.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the Alte Kapellenschule (old chapel school), walk through the idyllic village centre, past Jung-Stilling’s place of birth (including memorial room) past the hill up to the grazing slope. You can enjoy the wonderful view before taking woodland paths gently uphill towards Kronprinzeneiche. There, cross the road and walk along a medieval trading route to the Ginsburg hill (583 m above sea level). Here, the restored viewing tower offers a wonderful view onto Hilchenbach, and the Ginsburgstube restaurant in the adjacent castle kitchen is a good place to stop for a short rest. For anyone wanting a more hearty meal, the Ginsberger Heide restaurant (open daily from 9am to 10pm) and the upland moor alongside it is a short walk away. From the Ginsburg hill, you descend again, passing the Bahnhof Zollposten barn and beer garden (usually open for refreshments at the weekend) along the Kromberg hill and into the delightful Insbachtal valley. From here, you have another wonderful view onto the village of Grund before slowly descending. Down in the valley, you’ll pass a water treading pool, where you can cool your feet. You’re now just a short distance away from the starting point in Grund. Alternatively, you can start the circular route at Vormwald station (Rothaarbahn RB 93 regional train, train station).
