Wir starten die Tour am Wanderparkplatz „Großer Stein“ in Holzhausen. Gemeinsam mit dem Rothaarsteig-Zuweg wandern wir bergan. In unmittelbarer Nähe zum „Großer Stein“ kommen wir an eine der sieben Hörstationen. Wenige Schritte später treffen wir dort auf den Rothaarsteig (RHS). Wir biegen nun gemeinsam links Richtung Lützeln ab. Unvermittelt öffnet sich für uns der grandiose Blick auf Lützeln, das unten im Tal eingebettet ist. Nach dem Abstieg an den Dorfrand steigt der Weg wieder Richtung Sportplatz an. Als Relikt aus der Zeit eines aktiven Steinbruchs passieren wir später die alte Brecheranlage. Weiter der Gesamtstrecke folgend biegen wir zusammen mit dem RHS nach rechts ab und kommen zum nächsten Höhepunkt: der Aussicht an der Kaolintongrube. Nach landschaftlich abwechslungsreichen Kilometern folgen wir dem Weg links zum Wald. Nach 10 km gibt es links der Strecke einen Rastplatz Höppches Hain mit toller Aussicht. Am Dreiländereck werden wir zum Grenzgänger. Breite Waldwege führen anschließend auf der Nordflanke des Hickengrundes nordwärts. Wir bleiben weiter auf der Höhe und machen uns auf zum nächsten Aussichtspunkt „Einsamer Baum“. Weiche Wiesenwege begleiten uns anschließend abwärts, wobei es auch steile Abschnitte zu bewältigen gilt. Kurz vor Niederdresselndorf geht es per Holzbrücke über den Bach. Nach dem Ort steigen wir durch offene Wiesen bergan zum Waldrand. Auf einem fast eben verlaufenden Weg kommen wir zurück zum Start am Wanderparkplatz.

Information on the rescue boards on the Rothaarsteig

Hiking trails are usually far from communities and settlements and every hiker has worried at some time about what would happen if there was an emergency. How can I be found here? Where am I? Can I contact the rescue service?

In serious cases, however, this has to happen quickly! Because of this, so-called rescue signs have been installed all along the Rotharrsteig. The green and white plaques that have been attached to the signposts show the number you have to give when making your emergency call. This tells the rescuers exactly where you are, allowing valuable time to be saved.

Tips and hints

After the hike, the restaurants look forward to your visit. Discuss what you saw over freshly prepared treats and a cold drink. Bakeries, butcher shops and the local grocery store offer you snacks.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour begins at the “Grosser Stein” car park in Holzhausen. Walk uphill along the path that leads to the Rothaarsteig trail. Directly near the “Grosser Stein” rock, you arrive at one of the seven listening stations. A few steps later, you reach the Rothaarsteig (RHS) hiking trail. You now follow the trail to turn left towards Lützeln. Suddenly, a wonderful view opens out onto Lützeln, nestling below in the valley. You later pass the old crushing plant, a relic from the time when the quarry was still in use. Continuing along the overall route, turn right together with the RHS and you’ll come to the next highlight, the view on the kaolin clay pit. After several kilometres of varying landscape, follow the path to the left to the forest. At the “Drei-Länder-Eck”, the corner where three countries meet, you cross a federal state boundary. Wide forest paths then take you northwards on the northern flank

of the Hickengrund region. Continue at the same level and head for the next viewing point, “Einsamer Baum” (“lonely tree”). You then follow soft meadow paths downhill; in some places, the descent is steep. Shortly before Niederdresselndorf, cross the stream over a bridge. After the village, go uphill to the edge of the forest through open meadows. You reach the starting point at the hikers’ car park on an almost flat path.

You can get here in comfort by train. Exit at Holzhausen or Niederdresselndorf. From there, you can reach the hiking tour via the marked Rothaarsteg access route in the direction of Burbach. The loop tour can also be reached by bus. Exit at the Hoorwaldstraße stop in Burbach-Holzhausen.

A45 to Haiger-Burbach, L730 to Holzhausen then via Hickengrundstraße and “Zum Großen Stein” to the natural pond/Großer Stein car park

Generell schöne Wanderung aber teilweise ist die Strecke nicht mehr begehbar und/oder verschwindet auch mal im Kahlschlag. Oft, nicht nur auf dieser Strecke, findet man abgestorben Nadelwald.Ohne Navi nicht zu empfehlen.

Eine sehr schöne und abwechslungsreiche Wanderung. Auf der ersten Hälfte mehr Schotter und Forstwege, auf der zweiten Hälfte schön viel Pfad und ein bisschen "Offroad". Die Ausblicke, die sich immer wieder auftun, sind super schön! Die Beschilderung ist mittlerweile auch durchgehend Top.

Eine schöne Tour, abwechslungsreich, primär durch (schönen) Wald, aber auch schöne, offene Passagen mit viel Weitblick. Bei Genußwander-Tempo mit Pausen sollte man schon 6 bis max. 7 Stunden einplanen. Ich habe sie an einem interessanten Novembertag mit Nebel am Morgen und Sonne ab Mittag gemacht. ACHTUNG: bis kurz vors Dreiländereck ist der Weg zu 95% identisch mit dem Rothaarsteig (Südschleife) und dadurch mehr als gut ausgeschildert. Danach aber das Gegenteil: an einigen Stellen ist Aufmerksamkeit und Intuition gefragt, wenn man kein GPS dabei hat (so wie ich) und wenn man nicht vom rechten Weg abkommen möchte (mir 3x passiert, als ich in Gedanken versunken war).
