Meadows bursting with life – not only a perfect habitat for grassland birds and butterflies but also for the rare Globeflower and Monkshood.

In the southernmost part of the District of Siegen-Wittgenstein, directly on the border with the state of Hesse, you will find the Valley of the Wetter Stream near the town of Holzhausen. The extensive meadows and pastures show the broad valley floodplain to its full advantage and are a very rare feature in the otherwise heavily wooded Siegerland.

The area is of outstanding importance for the population of meadow-breeding birds that have disappeared from most places in the modern agricultural landscape due to lack of flowers and thus insects. These include the Whinchat, whose population in the Burbach area is one of the largest in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. It shares the habitat with the equally endangered Meadow Pipit and Corncrake, which are also characteristic species of open landscapes.

In the Wetterbach Valley, such rare flowering shrubs as Globeflower, Monkshood and Betony flourish. The wealth of colourful flowers attracts rare butterflies like the Scarce Copper, the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and the Dusky Large Blue.

Sometimes you may even can see Black Storks or Red Kites circling over the valley. They nest in the surrounding forests, but find ample supplies of food in the stream valley.

Author’s recommendation

In May and June, the Wetterbachtal comes into its own: The Whinchats sing from their perches, Globeflowers create bright yellow patches between the pink of the Meadow Bistort and some areas turn blue from the flowers of the Wood Cranesbill.

Tips, hints and links

A leaflet describing the area can be downloaded from www.biologische-station-siegen-wittgenstein.de.

The theme trail "Literatur in der Natur - Romantischer Hickengrund" combines literature interest with an enjoyable hike.

The nationally-known Rothaarsteig trail passes to the west of Holzhausen. It links up with smaller circular trails, the so-called Rothaarsteig branch-trails Rothaarsteig-Spuren, one of which is the "Trödelstein-Pfad" near Burbach-Lippe.

One of the activities of the local heritage society Heimatverein Holzhausen is to hold cultural and natural history events.
