The Mittelland Route or D-Route 4 runs once across Germany from the Dutch-Belgian to the Polish-Czech border.

The Mittelland Route connects Germany's westernmost and easternmost points over a distance of just under 1060 km. The route runs through the forested low mountain ranges of the country and crosses the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the route partly coincides with the EuroVelo routes EV3 and EV4. Views and natural highlights await along the way in the Rhenish Slate Mountains, the Lahn Valley, the Thuringian Forest and Saxon Switzerland. Culture lovers are well catered for from the start in Aachen via Bonn, Siegen, Eisenach, Erfurt, Weimar to Dresden. Rivers such as the Rhine, Sieg, Fulda, Werra, Elbe and Spree, as well as several lakes, provide variety and refreshment.
