Hauberg is the name of a special form of oak-birch coppice that was widespread in Siegerland and neighboring areas for at least 800 years. Hauberg forestry consisted of the cooperative use of the forest to obtain firewood and charcoal, oak bark, to produce rye or buckwheat, and also as a "hudefläche" (grazing area) for livestock. At intervals of about 20 years, the Hauberg was cut down, and the brushwood was used to heat the bakehouses. After soil cultivation, buckwheat or rye was sown between the already sprouting "tree stumps" (roots) and harvested with sickles when ripe. Grazing by livestock occurred only after a rest period of four to eight years. Each year, a different section of the Hauberg was cultivated; the same section was due again every 18 to 20 years.
Firewood harvesting is today the only remaining use of the Hauberg. Hauberg forestry has lost importance since the end of the 19th century when charcoal was replaced by coal and oak bark by synthetic tanning agents.
The sustainable form of forest management has always been subject to constant change over time and shaped the cultural landscape of the region. Hauberg forestry was included in the nationwide register "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2018.
