For both young and old visitors, the forge museum in Arfeld offers both historical information and handicraft you can have a go at yourself.

The forge in Arfeld was build in the mid-19th century and was later expanded to include a wainwright’s workshop and a metal water wheel. The wagons built of steel and wood as well as agricultural devices were made under the roof of the forge and wainwright’s workshop.

Shoeing working animals was also part of the daily work. When the forge closed in 1970, the local association took over its management. The members repaired and restored the forge, the wainwright’s workshop and the tools and machinery.

In 2004, a replica of the Arnfeld hammer was built according to original drawings. The exhibition on the craft and agricultural equipment on the upper floor is also worth seeing. Today, the forge is a protected monument and is definitely worth visiting - especially as the “glowing fans” can still forge steel over the fire there themselves. You can even get married here: there is a room for wedding ceremonies at the forge.
