The themed hiking trail “Bei de Hullerkeppe” was established on the occasion of the village’s 600th anniversary in 2018 and deals with both the Dotzlar dialect and the juniper plant.
“Welcome to the juniper heads!” the name means in standard German: On one hand, because the villagers like to drink juniper schnapps, on the other hand, because the route passes by three juniper heaths.
The 19-kilometer-long path offers remarkable places and geological peculiarities. Enjoy the beautiful views and marvel at the diverse fauna: sometimes juniper appears as a tree, sometimes as a shrub—a true master of transformation.
Through this six-hour hike, some of the most beautiful juniper heaths in the Wittgenstein region are connected. A possible division of the path into three stages offers you a varied hiking experience.
Explore the exciting Dotzlar history and enjoy the fantastic view of the juniper heaths!

The hike begins at the former location of the threshing barn and leads to the former Hartmann inn in the village center. It continues past the chapel built in the 13th century and through a hollow path to the so-called Zollbaum.
At the top of the Burgberg there once stood a motte-and-bailey castle, of which only remnants can still be seen. The path goes downhill through forests to the Pfaffenhecke. We come to the Eder steep quarries, which partly drop an impressive 15 meters. Soon we reach one of the largest quartzite rock formations in the Wittgenstein region.
Across the country road, we come to the Hillerberg. We follow a path and reach the first juniper heath. The hike then leads over the hill to the Eisenstein. On the way down into the valley, we pass the “wide oak” and enjoy the view of another juniper field.
The route now runs along the edge of the nature reserve “Großer Keller”. We see an ancient boundary stone marking the historic border between the two counties. In the valley, we reach another border fortification, the “Wet Hedge”.
We follow the path downhill for a short distance and reach a monument commemorating the scandalous murder of the forester Friedrich Kroh.
The path leads along the forest to the source of the Meisbach. There, the route meets the Via Adrina hiking trail. Following the brook downhill, we soon cross a road. From there, the path continues into the wide Eder valley before reaching the starting point.
