The "Faule Birke" is an old field name for the Eisernhardt, one of Siegen's seven mountains. Its summit is marked by a mighty transmission tower, which the runner circles on the just over four-kilometer long route.

The Eisernhardt, with the concrete transmission tower near its 482-meter-high summit, is probably the most distinctive mountain in Siegen and can be clearly seen from Hesse, Sauerland, and Westerwald. The Siegerland region, including Eisernhardt, has a mining tradition over two and a half millennia old. The Bergbau Siegerland association has created a mining circular hiking trail on Eisernhardt, which the jogger also follows in short sections. Some tunnels of the old mines have been exposed and fitted with a new, nature conservation-compliant development in the tunnel entrance area. Care was taken to follow 19th-century templates to make the tunnel entrances as authentic as possible. On 26 panels, hikers receive information about Siegerland mining topics and are guided to the almost forgotten relics of Siegerland's mining history.

The route was developed by the regional running portal "Laufen 57", Frank Steinseifer

Directions

From the starting point at the large signpost with two old mine carts and the inscription "Faule Birke – Opening of the motorway on November 30, 1967," there are several routes (color-coded on the hiking board) and a running loop to Gilbergskopf (426 m above sea level), which starts here. The presented route is 4,050 meters long. Most of the forest trails are paved. After rainy days, there can be some muddy sections, so well-profiled running shoes are recommended. The start is at the red and white barrier heading west. The path initially leads downhill; after 250 meters, you climb a 200-meter-long ascent and then continue on the route on the left. It goes downhill again. After 1.2 km, the path crosses; the route first goes steeply downhill 70 meters then, after a sharp right turn, follows the most demanding section: initially following the Sauerland line, it climbs slightly for about 500 meters. After 1.8 kilometers, you cross the former runway of the glider airfield Eisernhardt, located below on the left. Passing a barrier, you reach the 2 km mark after 150 meters. The route then passes the highest point (444 m), on the right with a view of the 134-meter-high telecommunications tower, continuing flat to the 3 km mark (red bench). Now the path gently descends for one kilometer, passing a barrier and a small parking lot back to the starting point.
