From Hilchenbach station, it is just a few steps to the market square. There, you first follow the yellow-marked Rothaarsteig access route Hilchenbach-North through Helberhausen until you reach the Ferndorf Spring and the main Rothaarsteig trail. On the main Rothaarsteig trail, marked by a white lying R on a red background, you start heading south and cross the Ginsberger Heide. This area is characterized by relatively natural ravine forests and raised bog-like wetlands. After the heath, you reach the Ginsburg. The tower of the old castle ruin offers excellent distant views to the Siebengebirge in clear weather. Passing the Giller, also known for its special viewpoint, you reach Hilchenbach-Lützel station, from where you can start your journey home.

Equipment
The Rothaarsteig runs over many natural paths away from agricultural and forestry roads. Therefore, weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear are a must for every hike. We want you not only to stay "dry" but also to experience the "path of senses" with good footing.
In our small hiking shop at www.rothaarsteig.de/shop you will also find a selection of Rothaarsteig articles to prepare for your route or as souvenirs. We also gladly recommend the durable and high-quality outdoor equipment of our longtime partner, the outdoor outfitter Tatonka.
Hiking Backpack
With a suitable hiking backpack, your tour on the Rothaarsteig is twice as fun! Hiking backpacks offer very comfortable carrying properties through a ventilated carrying system, which ensures that sweat can evaporate immediately. They can be secured with a waist or hip belt and thus fit tightly to your back with every movement. They also have a practical holder for hiking poles and often a compartment with a hose outlet for a hydration bladder to ensure you stay hydrated at all times.
Rainwear
If changeable weather is forecast for your Rothaarsteig tour, remember to pack a light rain jacket or rain poncho. They take up almost no space in your backpack and also protect against unpleasant wind. Gaiters are also practical to protect your trouser legs from dirt and moisture. At our partner, the outdoor outfitter Tatonka, you will find high-quality, breathable rain jackets with minimal packing size, lightweight rain capes, and gaiters to keep your trouser legs protected.

First Aid Kit
To fully enjoy your hiking tour on the Rothaarsteig, a first aid kit should definitely be in your backpack. After all, nothing is more annoying than not being able to treat a foot blister or minor injuries immediately and cleanly. Tatonka's first aid kits are filled with all important materials for initial wound care and also contain an "outdoor cheat sheet" with a concise and clear guide for correct behavior in outdoor emergencies.
Here you find the first aid kits from Tatonka!
Food and Drinks
On some stages, especially between Lahnhof and Dillenburg, unfortunately, there are no dining options along the way. Be sure to pack food and drinks here, especially in summer, as adequate hydration is important.
Directions & Parking facilities
You can reach both the Hilchenbach station and the Hilchenbach-Lützel station via train line RB93.
Various free parking options are available both in Hilchenbach and Lützel.
Hilchenbach and Hilchenbach-Lützel both have a station and are accessible via Deutsche Bahn.
Further information can be found at www.bahn.de.
If you come by car, we recommend using public transport at the beginning of your route and parking the car at the endpoint. This way, you don't have to adjust your hike according to bus or train schedules.

Safety guidelines
Information about the rescue panels on the Rothaarsteig
Hiking trails mostly run away from towns and settlements, and all hikers probably have wondered what would happen in an emergency. How can I be found here? Where am I exactly? Can the rescue service reach me?
In an emergency, speed is crucial! Therefore, the Rothaarsteig is continuously equipped with so-called rescue signs. On the green and white plaques attached to the posts of the signposts is a number that you must provide when placing an emergency call. This way, rescue teams know exactly where you are, which can save valuable time.
Note on increased forest fire risk
Please keep in mind that due to dryness there is currently a heightened forest fire risk! Please observe the following:
- Adhere to the legal ban on smoking in the forest – valid in spring, summer, and autumn, specifically from March 1 to October 31.
- Observe the ban on open fires in the forest and within 100 meters of the forest.
- Take glass out of the forest – the magnifying glass effect can start forest fires.
If it’s already (too) late:
- Extinguish small fires if you can safely do so. Check the area carefully if necessary.
- Report fires at "112".
- Leave the danger area via the shortest route.
The forest thanks you!
Wisent and wildlife on the Rothaarsteig – behavior tips
Many wild animal species live in the forests along the Rothaarsteig. Encounters with red deer, wild boar, mouflon, and, for some time now, wisents are possible. You might meet the latter on the Rothaarsteig between Albrechtsplatz and Dreiherrenstein.
The risks posed by the wisents to hikers are low and can be minimized by suitable, respectful behavior.
- Pass the animals calmly and inconspicuously at a distance, do not startle them or look directly into their eyes.
- If the animals approach, stay calm, do not turn your back on them, and leave the area calmly but always within sight of the animal.
- If the animals come too close and you feel uncomfortable, shout, whistle, or make other noise to draw attention. Watch for threatening gestures!
- If boars "clack their teeth" or wisents lower their heads, they expect you to retreat. Step back!
- If you have a dog with you, keep it under control on a leash. If an animal attacks your dog, release the leash! The dog is faster and more agile than you and will definitely find you again!
