Discover the life of the nobility and enjoy royal views – this even works by bike. On the 20-kilometer route, it is worth briefly setting the bike down and visiting Berleburg Castle.

In the historic old town, the castle of the princely family of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg impresses. The house has been inhabited by the same family for over 750 years. The castle park with its enchanting orangery, large pond areas, and colorful flower beds invites you to linger. The bike route leads uphill through the upper town of Berleburg past princely forests. You should also plan a stop at the sculpture "Golden Egg." This special artwork belongs to the nationally unique "WaldSkulpturenWeg".

Directions

The bike route starts at the station in Bad Berleburg. The first stage takes you up to the old town with the castle. Here lives the princely family of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. You ride a few meters through the beautiful upper town after descending behind the castle park through the Berlebach. Then turn left, past the Odeborn Clinic and the Rothaar Bath.

After passing the Rothaar Bath, you reach the Eder Cycle Path, which you follow westward.

You cycle past Berghausen station and reach the mouth of the Trufte stream. You follow the stream for several kilometers through the woods. At first, the path leads gently but then steeply uphill in a short distance near the end. The effort is worth it because at the top, you see the "Golden Egg" in the middle of nature, one of the highlights on the art hiking trail "WaldSkulpturenWeg". Here, you should take the time for a short detour to the striking artwork 700 meters away.

Downhill, the route leads back to the old town and the station. A series of different restaurants and cafes line the route. The circular route ends back at the station in town.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A combination with other tour tips in Bad Berleburg is recommended for the following days. The motto for the three routes is 'High Times on the right and left of the Eder Cycle Path – becoming one with landscape and nature'.

An interesting detour is the Nature Park Info Center in Bad Berleburg. In addition to the tourist information, there is the bison experience exhibition and the new themed area "On the Trail of Nature." Interactive, digital, and playful, this focuses on the local fauna and flora. Furthermore, there are tips on hiking trails, sights, and leisure activities. A visit is worthwhile!
