An eventful route through fabulous forests, past impressive rock landscapes and over winding paths. The hiking trail promises a true adventure!

The 15-kilometer-long Wittgensteiner Slate Path is marked by the bat symbol, showing the way.

As the first premium hiking trail in the region, the Slate Path was awarded the German Hiking Seal of Quality in 2005 and has since captivated its visitors.

The route leads through four nature reserves and numerous biotopes. Even a genuine bat cave lies along the path. Along the trail, nature takes its freedom and unfolds its full beauty – a wilderness in the best sense.

You will encounter fascinating forest scenes, impressive rock formations, enchanted paths, huge slate heaps, and quarries as well as great views of the Eder valley, the old town of Berleburg, and the slate village Raumland.

The landscape is staged perfectly, and some sections of the route are adventurous and have an alpine character. Discover majestic veteran trees, idyllic waters, and historical traces of slate mining.

Directions

Our starting point is the hiking car park "Reisegarten" in Raumland. First, we accompany the Eder downstream and follow the former railway line, which we repeatedly leave briefly to reach the riverbank or explore pristine forest passages. We cross the Eder via stepping stones. Then we pass through an area of deadwood, go under the old railway embankment, and climb a path into the “Heiligeholz,” a mountainside dotted with rock cliffs. After that, we reach a mystical oak forest with numerous rock cliffs via an adventurous climb.

Across a mountain meadow, we enter the valley of the Bilsterbach. We pass a forester’s house on the right and encounter the natural Meckhäuser Bach. We follow this creek uphill along the valley edge and soon reach the Fredlar nature reserve with massive slate heaps, a system of dry stone walls, towering cliffs, and a scenic quarry.

We continue hiking via paths and forest trails to the ridge of Mount Fredlar, which carries another striking cliff. The descent via the old track leads into the Steinbach Valley. After a short climb, we arrive at the hiking car park "An der Lenne," offering a beautiful view of Bad Berleburg’s old town, with the magnificent baroque castle at its center. The special view through the eye stone is worthwhile. The path gently descends over the northwest flank of Limburg. Alongside a slate heap, the trail leads into a path that quickly gains altitude. At the top, we see the open-pit mine of the former Limburg mine and reach the extensive Hörre mining area nature reserve. The following path through the nature reserve offers views of the slate village Raumland with its significant early church at the center.
