This bike route follows in the footsteps of the wisents through beautiful villages and idyllic landscapes.

"Strong Landscape – Strong Animals" is the name of this route, which can be ridden as a loop on the Eder bike path. On this route, you can experience the wisents - the largest land mammals in Europe - up close, as a detour into the natural enclosure "Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig" is definitely worthwhile. In addition, beautiful landscapes, enchanting forests and wide meadows offer a special experience. Get to know the different facets of the small villages and cycle along the 40-kilometer route through the natural paradise.

Directions

The bike route starts at Aue-Wingeshausen station, which is centrally located in the village of Aue. From there, it goes along the Eder bike path towards Raumland. There you turn off to Stöppel and have a great view over Bad Berleburg. From here it continues to the old town and to Berleburg Castle. The path then leads further through the upper town to Trufterhain. High above the city, the "Golden Egg" can already be seen - a detour to the artwork of the Forest Sculpture Trail is worthwhile!

Your route becomes a bit more relaxed as it goes downhill a few meters into the Trufte. However, the next climb awaits you here - you cycle over Winterscheid and arrive at the Grunewald country inn. You briefly follow the road to then turn into the Preisdorf valley. From there it goes uphill again into the Fehlbach valley. Beautiful oak trees line the way up to the Schinn: once at the top you are rewarded with a wonderful view. The route now goes downhill to Wingeshausen.

In Wingeshausen, a longer climb follows, with repeatedly beautiful panoramic views. After a few kilometers, you reach the "Wisent Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig." In a natural enclosure, a herd of wisents lives here - a fascinating species protection project. A visit to the largest land mammals in Europe is impressive!

From the Wisent Wilderness, you first return the same way downhill towards Wingeshausen - the tour leads along the Rohrbach paddling pool, through the Casimir valley and the district of Müsse. Soon you will reach the start and finish point at the station in Aue.

Along the route are various gastronomic establishments inviting you to take a break, relax, and refresh. A flexible design of the tour is possible due to the routing at the stations.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The route is located at a total of three stations, so a flexible division is very possible.

Along the route you will find some inns and cafés. Please check the opening times in advance.

An interesting detour is the Nature Park Info Center in Bad Berleburg. Next to the tourist information, there is the Wisent experience exhibition as well as the new thematic area "Tracing Nature."
