"Die Holzmacherin" - a new cycling route all about wood. The large circuit shows you the beautiful landscape of our region over about 60 kilometers - repeatedly with a special view of the sustainable raw material.

The starting point for the large circuit is the market square in Bad Berleburg. From there, you cycle through the villages Wemlighausen, Girkhausen, Wunderthausen, Diedenshausen, Christianseck, Elsoff, Beddelhausen, Schwarzenau, Arfeld, and Raumland. The demanding route offers some climbs for you - but you will be rewarded with great views and wide vistas. At several locations, you can learn about the raw material wood and find out interesting details about the region. We recommend bringing packed provisions.

Directions

The route starts at the Nature Park Information Centre on the market square in Bad Berleburg. At the Poststraße junction, turn right towards the town center. At the pedestrian traffic light there, turn right into Bismarckstraße. On the right side, you will see the Wolf carpentry. Continue cycling and cross the tracks, then turn left into Moltkestraße/Marienburger Straße. At the end of this street, turn left into Am Breitenbach street. Now keep left and immediately turn right again; it goes towards the Vamed Acute Clinic. On the left side, you will find a new wooden pedestrian and cycle bridge - the so-called "Beaver Bridge." You cycle further uphill. Shortly before the clinic, turn left into An der Odebornskirche street. Follow this path out of the town to the village Wemlighausen.

In Wemlighausen, turn left to Heiderbrücke street and then immediately right towards the village center. Here, turn left into Am Schulweg street. At the end of this street, bear diagonally right and then ride up the slope to the church. At the height of the church, turn left onto a gravel path; follow this section for almost two kilometers through so-called calamity areas. After a farm (Dönges Hof), turn right first, then immediately left again, then right again, and left again. Now follow the path through deciduous and coniferous forests for about a kilometer and first turn left, then right again. You reach the sports ground in Girkhausen and cycle right further into the village. At the end of Pfaffenhude street, turn left onto Berleburger Straße. Keep right and continue into the village center. At the end of the street, you can take a detour to Drehkoite (street: An der Odeborn) or continue left into Bei der Kirche street. Now cycle left into Unterm Damberg street, which leads into Fritz-Erzberger-Weg. The first steep climb is now ahead of you. But you will be rewarded with a great view.

Follow the path via Hof Dambach to the Schwarzenau valley. Here, turn left and then right over a small bridge. The next climb awaits you. At the top, you have reached the highest point of your tour. The path is currently quite rutted due to forestry work, but you are still on the right track. Continue along the path and at the end of the gravel road, turn left to Sohl. Here, a rest stop of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park invites you to take a break. You continue and discover several picturesque external farms. Follow the path and signage for about 3.5 kilometers, then turn right towards Wunderthausen. Then turn left into Wemlighäuser street and immediately left again into Auf der Gemeinde street. The Erich-Otto Riedesel family produces various wood products in their business.

You now cycle into An der Hude street. Here you will find the creative wood and garden art by Katja Weller-Wahl. Continue straight ahead and turn right into Auf der Leie street. Attention! The last section goes steeply downhill. Turn left into Hallenberger Straße/State Road 717 and follow the road. At the town exit, you will see the Matthias Wahl construction and furniture carpentry on the right. Continue on State Road 717. At the entrance to Diedenshausen, turn left into Zum Eichbach street. In Diedenshausen, there are several wood-processing businesses: solid wood processing Georg Gernand, wooden goods and lamp parts Markus Müsse e. K., Rainer Dienst - wooden goods CNC milling technology, Georg Homrighausen wooden goods factory GmbH. In the village center, you will find the Diedenshausen heritage house. There is also a public toilet here. At the exit of Diedenshausen, turn right, pass the sports ground, keep left and then sharply left. Another steep climb is ahead of you. Now you enter the Wittgenstein Switzerland and are rewarded with a magnificent wide view. A rest in the hut at the roadside is recommended. You can also use the wooden portal for an extraordinary souvenir photo. Continue over the Struthbach to K 40 street. Turn left and follow the road for about 6 kilometers. Then turn right towards Arfelder Berg. At the Rinderstübchen, you can take another rest and at the same time enjoy an extraordinary view of the cowshed.

Continue and turn right, then immediately left again. You cross the Mennerbach and cycle right to Elsoff. Turn left and immediately right again. At the farm, turn right and rejoin K40. Turn left into Mennertalstraße. At the intersection, go straight and follow Vogteistraße to the Dornbach mill. There is the next wood-processing company - a sawmill.

Continue and turn right. You now cycle over the "Ebenau" to Beddelhausen. Follow the road and then turn right into Beddelhäuser street, then left and immediately left again into Wörthstraße. Cross the old arch bridge and follow the Eder cycle path to Schwarzenau. Here you pass two more wood-processing companies: Gelbach carpentry and Hess carpentry. Also, the self-service café of Schwarzenauer mill invites you to take another rest. Continue on the Eder cycle path to Arfeld, where you will again find a rest opportunity in the Via Adrina centre in the railway workers' self-service café. Pass Zoll carpentry, another wood-processing business. You follow the cycle path through the village Raumland and turn right near the local industrial area. From here, you cycle to the roundabout and take the second exit. Your route takes you over Stöppel and past the local school centre as well as Rothaarbad. Then it goes downhill into the town, and you reach your start and finish point at the market square.
